Arizona coach Lute Olson suspended the team’s leading scorer, Hassan Adams, from participation in this week’s Pac-10 tournament on Monday following the star forward’s arrest on suspicion of drunken driving over the weekend. Adams, a 21-year-old senior, issued a statement through the university apologizing to the coaches, university and the Wildcats’ fans. “I accept the coach’s decision to be suspended from the Pac-10 tournament,” Adams said. “I wish the team well and hope for its success. I’m looking forward to participating in the NCAA tournament if Arizona is invited.” Tucson police pulled over a car driven by Adams for speeding early Sunday and said they noticed signs he was intoxicated. Police said two breathalyzer tests showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.12%. The legal limit in Arizona is 0.08. Adams had missed a three-point try in the final shot of the Wildcats’ 70-67 home loss to Washington on Saturday. Adams is averaging 17.3 points per game this season, third in the Pac-10 behind Cal’s Leon Powe (20.0) and Washington’s Brandon Roy (19.6). The Arizona senior is the conference’s runaway leader in steals with 78 (2.69 per game). The Wildcats (18-11 overall, 11-7 Pac-10) play Stanford (15-12, 11-7) in the Pac-10 tournament quarterfinals Thursday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. |
