SAFETY Mock Accident Shows Students the Pain of DUI
A staged auto accident in front of San Dimas High School met with mixed reactions from some of the juniors and seniors it was supposed to impress. None of the 350 students who attended the school's annual prom in Long Beach on Saturday were involved in alcohol-related accidents before or after the event, school officials said. Some students said demonstrations such as the one staged last week by the school's Students Against Drunk Driving chapter, county firefighters and deputies with the Walnut/San Dimas Sheriff's Station will have no impact on some students. More Social Drinkers Being Arrested For Dui
Despite the barrage of anti-drunken-driving advertising, the percentage of social drinkers arrested for driving under the influence in Chester County has been rising steadily since 1985, according to statistics compiled by the county's Council on Addictive Diseases (COAD). The increase may be due, in part, to increased enforcement of the drunken- driving law by local police, said Bob Esty, executive director of COAD. It may also be symptomatic of a failure to educate drivers Source : nl.newsbank.com
College student leader charged with DUI
Bloomsburg University's student government president was charged with drunken driving just weeks after saying the media has unfairly portrayed students as irresponsible. Christopher Bevan, 21, was pulled over last weekend after a campus police officer said he saw the student driving more than 50 mph in a 15-mph zone. A breath test showed Bevan's blood-alcohol level was .147%, authorities said. The legal limit for drivers in Pennsylvania is .08%. Bevan recently wrote a letter to the Press Enterprise of Bloomsburg about media coverage of the central Pennsylvania college's annual Block Party, an event critics have described as rowdy and alcohol-fueled. When ESL Meets DUI, the Message Is as Simple as ABC
Students in Michael Javier's evening ESL class at Evans Adult School in downtown L.A. were learning some strange new words along with basic English. Words like zig zag and equilibrium, revocation and suspension. This first-in-the-nation program is taking the message-"Si Toma, No Maneje" (If You Drink, Don't Drive) to Latinos. The statistics show the need: According to the California Dept. of Justice, Latinos, about 26% of the population, account for 45% of DUI arrests. That adds up to more than 120,000 arrests. The ESL lesson plan was written by Javier and LAUSD teachers Sharon McMarr and Steve Ryan, with the goal of

Toughening of dui laws is urged under one proposal, drivers would lose their licenses upon arrest. A hearing would cost $100
