Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson was sentenced to 24 hours in jail and three years’ probation after pleading guilty to charges of drug possession and driving under the influence, the Associated Press said. Tyson admitted to a judge in September that he had cocaine and was impaired when he was stopped for driving erratically after leaving a Scottsdale, Arizona, nightclub on Dec. 29, AP said. He faced a maximum of four years and three months in prison at his sentencing today. He pleaded guilty to single counts of cocaine possession and driving under the influence, while counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and another DUI charge were dropped, AP said. Tyson, who became the youngest heavyweight champion in history when he beat Trevor Berbick in 1986 at age 20, checked into a treatment program after the December arrest. He was convicted of rape in Indiana in 1992 and pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault charges in Maryland in 1999. |
