Virginia lawmakers rejected a bill that would have sent first-time DUI offenders to jail for a minimum of three days (front page, Feb. 14). Actually, three days converts to about one day once you’re in the system. This was done in large part at the urging of Democratic Del. Kenneth R. Melvin, who argued that three days was too tough and that even elected officials could find themselves in this situation. Sound familiar? Del. Melvin is from Portsmouth.
