Stockard Channing Pleads No Contest to DUI

Actress Stockard Channing (search) pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor drunken driving charge stemming from an incident last year on the Hollywood Freeway.

Channing, 61, who won an Emmy for her role as the first lady on NBC’s “The West Wing,” (search) was ordered to pay a $390 fine and take part in an alcohol education program after pleading no contest (search) Thursday, said Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the city attorney’s office. She was also placed on 36 months of probation, Mateljan said.

The actress was arrested Dec. 14 after allegedly trying to drive around a roadblock set up so a tow truck could removed a disabled tractor-trailer.

The state Department of Motor Vehicles generally pulls the licenses of people convicted of DUIs, then temporarily allows them to drive only to work and treatment programs, said Steve Haskins, a DMV spokesman. It was unclear whether Channing’s license was taken away, he said.

Channing’s attorney, Richard Hutton, did not return a call for comment Tuesday.
