Nearly one in four drinking drivers in fatal crashes last year in Virginia had been convicted of drunken driving before, state records show. In a computer analysis requested by The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star, the state Motor Vehicles Department found that 81 of 360 drivers drinking before fatal crashes - 23 percent - had at least one previous DUI.
