Malibu judge says Nick Nolte completes probation in DUI case
Actor Nick Nolte has successfully completed probation ordered after his 2002 no contest plea to a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of drugs, a judge ruled Wednesday. Nick Nolte's trouble began when on Sept. 11, 2002 when he was arrested for suspicion of DUI and this mugshot was taken. l Nolte was present at the hearing before Judge Lawrence Mira. Nolte, 61, was charged with one count of driving under the influence and one count of being under the influence of the drug gamma-hydroxybutyrate, commonly known as GHB. Both are misdemeanors. Nolte was arrested September 11 while driving on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu after a California Highway Patrol said he was "weaving and driving erratically." He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Malibu Superior Court, but defendants are not required to appear for arraignment in misdemeanor cases. (AP) Actor Nick Nolte pleaded no contest Thursday to one count of driving under the influence of drugs. He was sentenced to three years probation, including counseling and drug testing. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dropped a second misdemeanor charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance. The 61-year-old "48 Hours" star had been swerving his black Mercedes into oncoming lanes on Pacific Coast Highway when he was stopped on Sept. 11 near his Malibu home. Five days after sparking a Hollywood scandal with an anti-Semitic rant during a traffic stop, Mel Gibson was charged Wednesday with driving under the influence of alcohol. The 50-year-old Passion of the Christ filmmaker also was charged with having an open container of alcohol in his car, an infraction of the vehicle code.
