SAFETY Mock Accident Shows Students the Pain of DUI
A staged auto accident in front of San Dimas High School met with mixed reactions from some of the juniors and seniors it was supposed to impress. None of the 350 students who attended the school's annual prom in Long Beach on Saturday were involved in alcohol-related accidents before or after the event, school officials said. Some students said demonstrations such as the one staged last week by the school's Students Against Drunk Driving chapter, county firefighters and deputies with the Walnut/San Dimas Sheriff's Station will have no impact on some students. Regional DUI effort shows results
On the one-year anniversary of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Team DUI program yesterday, the state Department of Transportation announced that the number of drunken-driving fatalities in the region had dropped from 77 in 1999 to 64 in 2000. More Social Drinkers Being Arrested For Dui
Despite the barrage of anti-drunken-driving advertising, the percentage of social drinkers arrested for driving under the influence in Chester County has been rising steadily since 1985, according to statistics compiled by the county's Council on Addictive Diseases (COAD). The increase may be due, in part, to increased enforcement of the drunken- driving law by local police, said Bob Esty, executive director of COAD. College student leader charged with DUI
Bloomsburg University's student government president was charged with drunken driving just weeks after saying the media has unfairly portrayed students as irresponsible. Christopher Bevan, 21, was pulled over last weekend after a campus police officer said he saw the student driving more than 50 mph in a 15-mph zone. A breath test showed Bevan's blood-alcohol level was .147%, authorities said. The legal limit for drivers in Pennsylvania is .08%. When ESL Meets DUI, the Message Is as Simple as ABC
Students in Michael Javier's evening ESL class at Evans Adult School in downtown L.A. were learning some strange new words along with basic English. Words like zig zag and equilibrium, revocation and suspension. This first-in-the-nation program is taking the message-"Si Toma, No Maneje" (If You Drink, Don't Drive) to Latinos.
