Former NFL running back charged with DUI

TAMPA, Fla. — Former NFL running back Rabih Abdullah was arrested early Monday on charges that he had a gun and marijuana in his car.

The 31-year-old former player for Tampa Bay, Chicago and New England was charged with driving under the influence, carrying a concealed firearm and possessing marijuana. He remained jailed on $3,000 bond.

Police said they noticed Abdullah driving erratically. He failed a field sobriety test, and a subsequent search of his car revealed a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol, brass knuckles and small amount of marijuana, according to a police report.

He refused a breath test at the jail, police said. It was not immediately known if Abdullah had a lawyer.

In 2004, Abdullah, then with the Bears, was charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident in Northbrook, Ill. He pleaded guilty to DUI and was sentenced to a year’s probation and ordered to get alcohol and substance abuse counseling.

Abdullah played seven seasons in the NFL, starting in 1998 with the Buccaneers before joining the Bears for 2002 and 2003. He played nine games for the Patriots before being released in 2004.

Jail records listed Abdullah’s occupation as loan officer for a Clearwater financial firm. A company official Monday declined to comment on Abdullah’s employment.
