DUI van to bolster police efforts

Las Vegas police traffic officers expect in 2005 to nearly triple the time they spend looking for drunken drivers on weekend nights.

Austin Nichols, the title character in HBO's "John From Cincinnati," was arrested early Friday on suspicion of drunken driving. The 27-year-old actor was stopped by police about 2:40 a.m. after being spotted driving a silver Mercury Mountaineer the wrong way down a one-way street in the city, said Jackson police Lt. John Holda. An officer smelled alcohol and, after conducting sobriety tests, took Nichols into custody. A breath test later indicated he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.10 percent, Holda said. Bill would mandate ignition testing device for DUI offenders

A first-time drunken-driving offender would be required to install an ignition device that checks the driver's blood alcohol level before the engine is started, according to a new bill unveiled by a San Francisco lawmaker Wednesday. Such a penalty is already available to California judges, but very few hand out that punishment, proponents of SB177 say. In fact, in 2003, only 3.8 percent of all driving under the influence convictions required defendants to install the ignition devices.
