B. Smith Charged With DUI
Buffalo Bills defensive end Bruce Smith was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after police in his home town of Virginia Beach said they found him sleeping at the wheel with his car running. Smith was found at an intersection at 6:21 a.m. Sunday, Virginia Beach police spokesman Mike Carey said yesterday. Smith's 1996 four-door Mercedes was in a traffic lane. Smith, the NFL's defensive player of the year last season, is under contract but not in training camp because of a contract dispute with the Bills. Bills cracking down on drunken drivers and aiding homeowners who lose their houses in fires or other natural disasters cleared legislative hurdles Thursday. The Assembly approved a bill that would let law enforcement officers impound the vehicle of a suspected drunken driver, if that driver had a previous conviction for driving under the influence.
