Former Oakland A’s star Vida Blue was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence following a minor traffic accident. Blue, the 1971 American League MVP and Cy Young winner, was arrested early Sunday after officers called to the accident scene noticed he was impaired, Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark said Tuesday. The 55-year-old Blue was booked for investigation of DUI and released several hours later. The results of the blood alcohol test were not available Tuesday. No one was injured in the accident, Clark said. Blue, a six-time All-Star, played 17 seasons with Oakland, San Francisco and Kansas City before retiring in 1986. New York Yankees: Yankees reliever Paul Quantrill will be sidelined for at least a few days because of soreness in his left ribcage. Quantrill could resume throwing Thursday. “I’d pitch today if they really wanted me to,” Quantrill said Tuesday. “It’s nothing major.” Yankees closer Mariano Rivera felt better Tuesday, one day after an MRI exam showed mild burstitis in his right elbow. He might throw in the bullpen session Friday. “More range today,” Rivera said. “A little bit better today.” New York outfielder Ruben Sierra, out with a ribcage injury, took 120 swings during a tee and soft toss hitting session. “Everything is fine,” he said. Chicago Cubs: Injured pitchers Kerry Wood and Mark Prior are scheduled to throw Wednesday at Cubs camp. Wood, who has not pitched since March 9 because of bursitis in his right shoulder and irritation around the rotator-cuff muscles, will throw 20 to 30 pitches from the mound, pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. Prior, sidelined by inflammation around the ulnar nerve in his right elbow, will play catch on flat ground. Wood is scheduled to start on opening day April 4 at Arizona. Prior is slated to follow the next day. But Rothschild and manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday they might have to reconsider the order of the rotation because of the health of the two aces. “I don’t want to assume right now without talking to them first,” said Baker, whose team is off on Wednesday. “We’ll address this after we come back from the break and see how Prior and Wood feel … and we’ll get a better idea how to recondition them.” San Diego Padres: Sean Burroughs is getting demoted — in the batting order, that is. And he couldn’t be happier. Now that the Padres have a true leadoff hitter in Dave Roberts, Burroughs has been dropped all the way down to the eighth spot, where he figures he’ll be a lot more comfortable. “I love it,” Burroughs said. But he wasn’t always comfortable, which is why he was happy when the Padres acquired Dave Roberts in a trade with the Boston Red Sox on Dec. 20. So the third baseman will drop down to No. 8, although he might occasionally bat in the sixth or seventh spots. “I think it’s going to be good because I can learn to let go a little bit more,” he said. “I’ll have a different mentality. That’s good. When I had an opportunity with a runner in scoring position, it just seemed like I had better at-bats. I think I’m going to have a lot of those, being sixth, seventh or eighth, wherever I end up.” |
